Campione is an Italian enclave on the shores of Lake Lugano, completely surrounded by Swiss territories. From the historic politic and economic point of view Campione has no equal. The origin of this exceptional situation can be traced back to the donation made by Tortone, a Longobard landowner, to the basilica of St. Ambrogio in Milan in 777. It had been a fief of the Church for over 1000 years when, in the late 18th century, it became part of Longobardia and later, together with Lombardy, of the Reign of Italy.
